PET ENCOUNTER THERAPY

Are you and your dog or cat an amazing team?

Are you interested in sharing the love of your pet with those who are in hospital, long term care facilities or otherwise unable to enjoy the love and companionship of a pet of their own?

The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA Pet Encounter Therapy program provides our clients with both the joy of a friendly visit and the opportunity to work toward specific therapeutic goals with the assistance of our wonderful volunteers and their furry friends.

The most important aspect of Pet Encounter Therapy (PET) is the improved quality of life that comes from the unconditional love and tactile benefits given by our animals. The people that we serve are often isolated due to either physical and/or emotional crisis. The visits with our animals connect individuals with a form of life that provides love and support.

Requirements for PET Animals

Dogs and cats must be at least 1 year of age, must be spayed/neutered and in good health with up to date vaccinations. Animals must be calm, very friendly and comfortable in new situations and with other animals.

All animals and handlers must complete an assessment and training prior to visiting our clients.

Requirements for Handlers

Handlers should enjoy interacting with people of all ages and ability and be prepared to make a minimum 6 month commitment of at least 3 hours twice a month.
