VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTON

POSITION Animal Care Assistant
SUPERVISION Animal Care Assistants will work closely with selected SPCA staff under the direction of the Adoptions and Animal Care Department Manager.
TASK Assist in the feeding, cleaning and handling of adoption animals as assigned and perform other kennel area support duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS Must be at least 16 years old and in generally good physical condition with a strong desire to work closely with animals. This position requires frequent lifting, bending and cleaning as well as working safely with various disinfectant solutions. Ability to work to a structured schedule and with a minimum of direct supervision is a definite asset. Participants should also be clear of animal allergies. Training will be provided, including the handling and care of animals and appropriate WHMIS applications.
SCREENING All volunteers must complete the appropriate SPCA orientation, screening and training procedures including at least two personal references and a police clearance check.
HOURS OF WORK SPCA kennels operate on a seven day a week basis. Structured shifts will be made available between approximately 7 am to 7 pm.
EVALUATION An evaluation interview will take place after six months of service and thereafter on an annual basis.

VOLUNTEER ANIMAL CARE ASSISTANT

GENERAL DUTIES

  • report to appropriate adoptions department/kennel area staff for daily assignment
  • appropriate clothing must be worn (scrubs, rubber boots, gloves etc.)
  • goggles and ear plugs are available as needed
  • ensure that various mop buckets are kept filled with disinfectant solution as directed
  • cleaning/disinfecting of animal food dishes as needed
  • food preparation, feeding and general handling (including petting, grooming, play etc.) of various animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats and mice, as assigned
  • scrubbing and disinfecting of kennels and surrounding areas including removal/disposal of feces and other soiled material as required
  • light laundry duties as assigned (washer/dryer provided for blankets, pads etc.)
  • recording information on animal tracking cards as required
  • power washing of kennels and kennel area as required
  • general cleaning/disinfecting of counter tops, sinks, floors and walls as required
  • working reliably to a structured schedule
  • completing volunteer assignment sheets and recording hours worked etc.
  • must adhere to SPCA employment practices and standards and all related health and safety, human rights, WHMIS and anti discrimination/harassment requirements and policies
