Volunteer Positions

At the HBSPCA, we have a variety of positions available for those interested in volunteering. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
Administration
Phone Volunteer: Support staff by assisting in answering phones, covering lunches and providing other administration support as required.
Adoptions and Animal Care Department
Adoptions Centre Associate: Assist HBSPCA Adoption staff in a variety of ways including direct customer contact, adoption processing, data entry and telephone support. Excellent customer service skills required!
Satellite Adoptions Associate: Responsible for client care at satellite adoption locations and to facilitate the animal adoption process utilizing the "Meet Your Match" program to help match adopters with the best possible new companion. The Satellite Adoption Associate provides impeccable customer service; communicates accurately and effectively, maintains a safe and healthy environment; processes sales transactions and keeps precise records.
Animal Care Assistant: Assist in the feeding, cleaning, handling of adoption animals as assigned and perform other kennel area support duties as required. The position can be with either cats or dogs or both.
Small Animal Care Assistant: Assist in the feeding, cleaning, handling and socializing of bunnies, rats, etc. in the small animal room.
Fostering: Fostering volunteers care for selected animals in their own homes. These animals may be mildly ill and need special love and care. We are looking for fosters for dogs, cats and sometimes other animals like rodents and rabbits. Support such as food and medical treatment will be provided by the HBSPCA on an as needed basis.
Companion Animal Hospital: Prepare animal for surgery in the mornings and watch animals' vital signs and statistics during recovery period.
Dog Walking/Small Animal Socializing: Walking adoption dogs for exercise and socialization (outdoors, rain or shine, some grooming and play. Socialization/play indoors with selected cats and small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats). Specific training is provided.
Development Department
Development/Fundraising Associate: Assist in a variety of existing HBSPCA fundraising activities, as well as plan and present new events in conjuction with the development team.
Displays Volunteer: Set up and staff display booths at various community events and to inform the public about HBSPCA programs and events.
Events Assistant: Assist in executing successful, smooth running events at various times throughout the year. Includes helping distribute posters and other items, picking up items and supplies, assisting with set up and general support on the day of the event.
Administration/Office: Assist HBSPCA administration staff with selected office support taks including data entry (using a variety of computer programs), telephone reception, photocopying, document collation, lottery support, mail, receipts and other clerical duties as assigned.
Coin Box Liaison: Visit locations to check and maintain coin boxes, maintain positive relationships with community supporters who allow our coin boxes in their businesses.
Volunteer Department
Administrative/Office: Supports staff with office tasks such as data entry, respond to email inquiries, assist new volunteers in completing paper work, assist with orientation sessions.
Community Programs
PET (Pet Encounter Therapy): A volunteer based program that provides the opportunity to share the love and tactile benefits of animals with those in healthcare facilities, retirement homes, shelters and day programs. Volunteers and their pets visit regularly to improve the quality of life of those no longer able to have pets of their own. Volunteers who have pets are assessed in order to ensure they meet the requirements of the PET program. Volunteers who do not have pets may take the HBSPCA animals as well. Volunteers may also assist the PET program with administrative supprt and small animal care.
Humane Education: Delivers a series of prepared humane education sessions and/or shelter tours to selected youth groups, elementary and secondary school students, HBSPCA youth campers and junior humane and apprentice volunteers. Humane education sessions may take place offsite or at the shelter, depending on pre-arranged circumstances.
Scrapbooking/Poster Making: Takes photos at different programs and create scrapbooks and other visuals that promotes our programs to the public.
Administrative Assistant: Answers phones and emails, books tours, program registration, distributes program information.
Other
Light Maintenance Assistance: Completes a variety of tasks, including painting, cleaning, basic electrical (changing light fixtures), basic plumbing (clearing drains, etc.), light groundskeeping, various basic repairs in keeping with the tenants of the Health and Safety Act. Jobs will be assigned based on individual ability and expertise.
