Community Cat Coordinator

The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) is a leader in animal welfare in the Golden Horseshoe and one of Ontario’s most progressive animal welfare agencies. The HBSPCA is a not-for-profit animal welfare organization largely supported by donors and friends of the animals.

The Position

The Community Cat Coordinator is responsible for the execution of Community Cat programming at HBSPCA like our TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) Program. Working with caregivers to provide the best possible outcomes for community cats. Trapping, transporting, booking appointments, and providing support to caregivers and community members. The Community Cat Coordinator will also be called upon to advocate for community cats and spread awareness of the HBSPCA programs. Time management, organization and attention to detail is crucial. You will be working with all departments in the organization, as well as volunteers and members of the public. The ability to work successfully in a team environment and build effective working relationships is essential.

The position will be an HBSPCA ambassador representing the organization daily, supporting, educating, and delivering programs that advance our mission and outreach growth strategies. Included but not limited may be the management of an expanded community outreach services program for cats within our community.

As the successful candidate, you will bring your “can do” attitude to fulfill the following responsibilities:

Responsibilities

  • Support and manage client inquiries and concerns daily
  • Respond to phone enquires and emails from caregivers within 1 working day
  • Identify and grow our cat support caregivers’ program within the community
  • Accountable to perform site visits, trap, and transport if necessary
  • Maintain control of traps. Tracking rentals and ensuring traps are returned.  Ensure traps are clean and ready for next caregiver
  • Work with HBSPCA Companion Animal Hospital and local veterinary clinics to book surgery appointments
  • Monitor and maintain animal health records, enter in PetPoint
  • Perform trapping and returning according to HBSPCA protocols, ensuring the highest levels of stress management, comfort and safety for the cats and humans involved
  • Collect and process donations/payments from caregivers. Effectively communicate the needs for donations from caregivers and the public
  • Follow protocols to safely transport cats in HBSPCA vehicles
  • Effectively communicates updates or discharge instructions to caregivers
  • Provide food assistance to caregivers, depending on supply available.
  • Work with shelter intake staff to identify available space for kittens
  • Articulate and explains HBSPCA programs effectively to caregivers and community members
  • Perform administrative duties as required including but not limited to data entry, document scanning, e-filing, phone calls.
  • Embrace volunteerism, emphasizing the importance of volunteers in all aspects of HBSPCA programs. Assists in training volunteers as needed.  Mentors trapping volunteers and delegates appropriate trapping sites to qualified and experienced volunteers.
  • Identify and promote the cat partnership program within our community by working with the Director to create innovative marketing and brand awareness vehicles
  • Management, service, and documentation of a corporate vehicle
  • Assist the Fund Development team or Director in the identification, creation, and pitch to potential sponsorship partners to help fund the program
  • Identify ways to raise funds to support the base and expansion of the cat program.
  • Attend community meetings, sit on community committees, and assist with advocacy information to support the Director or CEO
  • Build strong community rapport with “Cat specific community partners”
  • Work with your Director and CEO to identify strategies to grow our awareness within the community.
  • Support and work together as a team creating a positive and energetic working environment, by offering ideas and solutions to day-to-day problems.
  • Be a brand ambassador ensuring that the public, volunteers, and other staff find you approachable and eager to be here.
  • Wear your assigned uniform in a clean and professional way.
  • Identify any health and safety issues and bring them to your supervisor immediately.
  • Identify potential clients to recommend other medical products
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Perform their job duties in a manner conducive to a safe workplace, following all employer practices, policies, and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned from time to time including support to our adoption and customer service programs.

Qualifications

  • Animal Care program graduate preferred, high school graduate with Animal Care experience
  • Experience in a Humane Society or Veterinarian clinic is considered an
  • Knowledge or understanding of the Standards of care in Animal Shelters, Capacity for Care and the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare are considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Hamilton community
  • Safe animal handling skills
  • Good verbal communicational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently or part of a team
  • Ability to lift 40lbs
  • Positive attitude a must

Animal Attendant Level 1 - Part Time

The Position

As an Animal Care Attendant, you will be responsible to provide and maintain a clean and safe living space for the animals in the care of the HBSPCA. This includes daily feeding, cleaning, and enrichment. Time management, organization and attention to detail is crucial. You will be working with all departments in the organization, as well as volunteers and members of the public. The ability to work successfully in a team environment and build effective working relationships is essential.

• Provide and maintain a clean and safe living space for animals in our care.
• Daily feeding/watering and general care of all animals.
• Administer medication as directed.
• Provide regular grooming and bathing of animals.
• Monitor and maintain animal health records.
• Ensure all animals are exercised and provide daily enrichment activities.
• General housekeeping including but not limited to laundry, dish washing, garbage/recycling.
• Assist and oversee volunteers and co-op students working within the Animal Care department.
• Transfer animals to and from the onsite Companion Animal Hospital.
• Assist with morning admit and afternoon discharge of pets to and from the onsite Companion Animal Hospital.
• Monitor and order supplies.
• Collect and sort donations.
• Perform administrative duties as required including but not limited to data entry, document scanning, e-filing, phone calls.

Qualifications
• Animal Care program graduate preferred, high school graduate with Animal Care experience considered.
