Advocacy for Animals
Your Voice Can Change Their Future
Animals depend on us to protect them. Advocacy is how we speak up on their behalf - shaping laws, policies, and community priorities to ensure every animal is treated with care and respect. At the HBSPCA, advocacy is an essential part of our mission: caring for animals in need today, while building a more humane tomorrow.
Advocacy is most powerful when we work together. You can be part of it by staying informed on upcoming issues and initiatives, and sharing what you learn with your friends, family, and social networks. Talking openly about animal welfare - at the dinner table, in your community, or online - helps shift public awareness in ways that matter. When petitions, campaigns, or calls to action arise, adding your voice amplifies the reach of every effort. Donations support the research, outreach, and education behind this work, but so does simply showing up - as an informed, vocal advocate for animals.

Include Animals in Canada's Emergency Management Act
Every year, wildfires, floods, and other disasters force Canadian families to make an impossible choice - leave their pets behind or stay and risk their lives. More than 60 percent of Canadian households have companion animals, yet Canada's Emergency Management Act makes no mention of them. Animals are left out of evacuation protocols, first responders lack the resources to help, and families are torn apart. We are calling on Prime Minister Carney and Minister of Emergency Management Eleanor Olszewski to amend the Emergency Management Act and ensure no animal is left behind when disaster strikes.

Help Stop Unnecessary Veterinary Procedures
Ontario just took a landmark step for animal welfare - banning ear cropping, declawing, and devocalization effective January 1, 2027. Cats finally have the protection they deserve. But dogs were left behind. Tail docking - removing a puppy's tail for appearance alone - was quietly dropped from the ban with no explanation. Ontario remains the only province in Canada with no restrictions on this painful and unnecessary procedure. We are keeping pressure on Premier Doug Ford and Solicitor General Michael Kerzner to include tail docking in future amendments. Sign our petition and help us finish the job for Ontario's puppies.
