Advocacy for Animals

Your Voice Can Change Their Future

Animals depend on us to protect them. Advocacy is how we speak up on their behalf — shaping laws, policies, and community priorities to ensure every animal is treated with compassion and respect. At the HBSPCA, advocacy is an essential part of our mission: caring for animals in need today, while building a more humane tomorrow.

What Advocacy Achieves

Tabby cat with folded ears standing on a purple plaid blanket in front of a blue cat house.

Stronger Protections

Advancing laws and regulations that keep animals safe.

Child wearing SPCA Foster Parent vest holding a small black and white dog in their arms.

Greater Awareness

Educating the public about animal welfare and the issues that matter most.

Orange tabby cat with green eyes lying on a raised pet bed inside a wire enclosure, being petted by a person.

Healthier Communities

Creating safer, more compassionate spaces for both animals and people.

How You Can Be Part of It

Advocacy is most powerful when we work together. Here are simple ways you can take action:

01

Stay Informed

Sign up for updates to learn about upcoming initiatives and issues that need your voice.

02

Raise Awareness

Share what you learn with friends, family, and on social media.

03

Add Your Voice

Participate in petitions, campaigns, and calls to action when opportunities arise.

04

Support Advocacy Efforts

Donations help fuel the research, outreach, and education that drive change.

Together for Change

Every step forward — whether it’s signing a petition, sharing information, or standing up for stronger protections — brings us closer to a community where animals can thrive. By speaking up together, we make sure animals have the voice they deserve.

Protect Animals, Protect Families: Support Bill C-16

When an animal is harmed, threatened, or exploited, the impact often reaches far beyond the animal alone. The connection between violence toward animals and violence toward people is well-documented — and it has left children, survivors, and pets without the protections they need. Bill C-16, the Protecting Victims Act, helps change that.
Support the Cause

Help Stop Unnecessary Veterinary Procedures

When animals undergo unnecessary veterinary procedures, the harm extends far beyond surgery. Practices like declawing, ear cropping, and devocalization cause avoidable pain and lifelong suffering. The Unnecessary Veterinary Procedures campaign promotes welfare-first, evidence-based care. By strengthening standards under the PAWS Act, it works to protect animals across Canada.
