TNVR 101 Presentation

What You’ll Gain from This Workshop

Are you passionate about animal welfare and interested in making a meaningful difference for cats in your community? This workshop is designed to equip you with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to take action in support of community cats. Whether you're a concerned neighbour, a future caregiver, or someone who simply wants to learn more about humane solutions, this session offers something valuable for everyone.

Discover the World of Community Cats

We’ll begin by exploring who community cats are — often referred to as feral or free-roaming cats — and how their behaviour, history, and needs differ from those of pet cats. Understanding the origins of community cat populations and how they have adapted to living alongside humans is a foundational step in advocating for and supporting their well-being. You'll learn to recognize typical colony dynamics, signs of health or distress in community cats, and how these animals fit into the larger ecosystem.

Understand the TNVR Process

A key focus of this workshop will be on TNVR — Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return — a proven, humane method for managing and stabilizing cat populations over time. You’ll gain step-by-step instructions on how to carry out a TNVR operation, from planning and trapping through to post-surgery care and return. We’ll discuss which tools and equipment are essential, how to prepare for and respond to unexpected situations, and how TNVR benefits both the cats and the neighbourhoods they inhabit.

Become a Knowledgeable Colony Caregiver

Caring for a cat colony is both a commitment and a rewarding experience. In this segment, you’ll learn about the responsibilities of a colony caregiver and the best practices for ensuring the cats remain healthy, safe, and stress-free. Topics will include feeding schedules, shelter options, winter care, ongoing health monitoring, and how to manage new arrivals or changes within the colony. We’ll also cover what to do if a cat becomes injured or ill and how to collaborate with veterinarians and rescue organizations.

Build Strong Community Connections

One of the most important — and sometimes challenging — aspects of supporting community cats is working with the humans who share their space. This workshop will provide guidance on how to effectively communicate with neighbours, dispel common myths, address concerns, and build support for TNVR efforts. You’ll learn how to become an advocate for the cats while fostering understanding and cooperation among community members. These communication skills are essential for long-term success in any community-based animal welfare initiative.

Plan Your Own TNVR Project

By the end of this workshop, you’ll be equipped with the tools and insights to begin planning your own TNVR project. Whether you're starting small with a few cats in your neighbourhood or envisioning a larger-scale effort, we’ll help you set realistic goals, develop a timeline, and identify resources and partners who can support your mission. We'll also discuss the importance of record-keeping, ongoing evaluation, and celebrating milestones along the way.

This workshop is more than just a learning opportunity — it’s a chance to become part of a compassionate movement to protect and care for community cats. With the right knowledge and support, you can become a leader in your neighbourhood, creating lasting change for both animals and people. Join us, and take the first step toward becoming a confident, capable, and compassionate advocate for community cats.
