Founding of the Hamilton SPCA

The first meetings were held that March, and Adam Brown became the founding president, serving for 35 years. This moment marked the beginning of organized animal welfare in the Hamilton region.
1919

Ontario passes the OSPCA Act

This was the province’s first animal welfare law, shaped in large part by lobbying efforts from Hamilton and other SPCAs. The legislation provided a legal foundation for protecting animals across Ontario.
1927

Hamilton SPCA Humane Education pamphlet distributed province-wide

The Ontario Minister of Education circulated the Hamilton SPCA’s pamphlet to schools across the province. This established Hamilton’s program as a model for humane education and children’s advocacy.
1948

First independent animal shelter opens

Built on Parkdale Avenue, it housed up to 200 animals and became a hub for animal care. This milestone transformed the HBSPCA from an advocacy group into a full-service sheltering organization. In 1968 a new $200,000 facility replaced the earlier building, significantly expanding space and services. It modernized the Society’s ability to provide medical care, housing, and adoptions.
1987

Centennial and expansion of services

The HBSPCA celebrated its 100th anniversary with a major community event, featuring cartoonist Ben Wicks as keynote speaker. That same year, the Society took on responsibility for animal control across a vast 700 kmÂČ service area.
1989

First Wiggle Waggle Walkathon held

This community fundraiser became a beloved annual tradition that ran for 33 years. It brought thousands of people and pets together in support of animal welfare.
1996

Dartnall Road shelter opens

The $5 million facility was considered one of the best in North America at the time, reflecting modern standards of animal care. Governor-General Roméo LeBlanc presided over its opening, underscoring its national significance.
2009

Companion Animal Hospital opens

This in-house clinic provided spay/neuter and medical care for shelter animals, while also supporting community programs. That same year, Ontario passed Bill 50, toughening animal protection laws with strong input from SPCAs.
2020

Adapting during the COVID-19 pandemic

The HBSPCA quickly transitioned to appointment-only adoptions with no-contact pickup and virtual interviews. Spay/neuter surgeries and the Trap-Neuter-Return program continued, ensuring core services carried on through the crisis.
2024

Pet Pantry launches

In its first year, the program distributed 70,000 meals to families in need, and it has since grown into the largest pet food bank in Canada. By helping pets stay with their families during financial hardship, the Pantry has become a cornerstone of HBSPCA’s community support.

Built by Volunteers

For generations, volunteers have been integral to the HBSPCA – shaping our mission, guiding out leadership and strengthening our impact. One whose name continues to resonate is Dr. Jean Rumney, a pioneering veterinarian and dedicated volunteer whose legacy continues to shape animal welfare in our community. In 1939, she became the first woman to receive a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph. She later operated Hamilton’s Blue Cross Animal Hospital and served as a longtime board member and friend of the Hamilton SPCA.

A committed advocate for animals, Dr. Rumney set a standard of service that continues to inspire generations of volunteers. Established following her death in 1975, the Dr. Jean Rumney Award honours individuals who demonstrate ongoing, outstanding dedication to the welfare of animals.

Adoption Commitment Approach

The HBSPCA receives thousands of adoption applications every year, and we want to respect your time and effort, while finding every animal their forever home. That's why we've created a first-of-its-kind, Adoption Commitment Approach.

Your Commitment

When you find an animal you'd like to adopt, you'll first start by submitting a fully-refundable deposit (payment authorization) on this website, which we pair with your application. Your payment authorization is a demonstration of your commitment to the adoption process, and the animal itself.

Our Guarantee

To honour your commitment, time and effort, the HBSPCA is able to provide the following guarantee: Every animal you see on your website is currently available for adoption (excluding those presenting with an ‘Applications Full’ banner). We limit the total of applications per adoptable animal to a small group of high-intent applicants, carefully review every application, and keep our website up-to-date. Applicants will receive an update from us within 10 business days.

Step 1: Find your furry companion

All available pets are posted on our website. Pets have a personalized profile to help you get to know them better. When you have found a pet that you are interested in adopting, you'll start by submitting a fully-refundable deposit (payment authorization), which we pair with your application. Your payment authorization is a demonstration of your commitment to the adoption process, and the animal itself.

Step 2: Apply

After submitting your deposit, you will receive an email with a formal application form. You MUST complete this application form within 48 hours to be considered for adoption.

Your application will be reviewed by our adoption team and if we have any questions, we'll reach out to you via telephone and email, within 10 business days. We often receive multiple applications per pet, so we thank you for your patience as we review each applicant.

Step 3: Meet & Greet

If you are a good match for the pet you've applied for, we'll set up a meet & greet with you. This is an opportunity to meet the pet you are interested in, ask further questions, and ensure you feel that you and the pet are the right fit.

Please note that we do aim to arrange meet n' greets within 5 days of contacting you for this appointment if your application is approved for adoption. We are often at capacity, and in order to help more animals our goal is to place our shelter pets into loving homes as quickly as possible.

If you are not prepared to take home the pet you are applying for within this timeframe, we recommend waiting until you are ready. We are not able to hold any shelter pets at this time.

If a match is made, you will receive all of the pet’s medical and microchip information, complete the adoption contract, and proceed with registration, payment and orientation. As the final adopter, your initial deposit will be credited towards the full adoption fee.

Step 4: Bring Your New Companion Home

Congratulations — your furry friend is all set to go home with you! We’re here to support you every step of the way with 5 days of post-adoption care from our onsite Companion Animal Hospital, 30 days of pet insurance, and a lifetime of guidance and resources from our experienced shelter staff.

‍NOTE: If you are selected as the final adopter, your deposit will be credited towards the full adoption price. In all other cases, your deposit will be refunded.

On our application, we ask if you would like to purchase items such as a bag of Hill's food (we currently feed this to our shelter pets), and other items we may carry in our Thrift Store such as cat litter, toys, and much more! Let us know if there is anything specific you need and we can check our store in advance!

When you adopt with us or shop at our thrift store, every purchase helps care for more shelter pets. From food to other essentials, your support makes a real difference!

Barn Buddy Program

Not every cat is suited to indoor living. Some cats are independent and thrive in outdoor environments such as barns, farms, stables, and rural properties. The Barn Buddy Program helps place these cats in safe, appropriate settings where they can live comfortably and have a purposeful role.

We maintain a waitlist of people interested in adopting a Barn Buddy. When a cat in our care is best suited for this type of placement, we contact individuals on the list as potential matches.All Barn Buddy cats receive full veterinary care before placement, including spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, and microchipping, and are placed through the Barn Buddy adoption process.

This approach helps ensure timely matches between cats and suitable environments while supporting adopters looking for a working outdoor companion.

Maverick & Hayley

Hayley adopted Maverick, formerly known as Scout, from the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA after previously adopting another dog, Marshmallow, from the same shelter. She first saw Maverick on the HBSPCA’s Instagram and felt an instant emotional connection that led her to bring him home. Having grown up with shelter dogs and recently adopted Marshmallow, Hayley strongly believes in giving rescue dogs a second chance.

When Maverick first arrived, he was quiet and withdrawn, spending most of his time in his crate, but slowly began to trust and engage with his new family. Surprisingly gentle and affectionate, Maverick bonded quickly with Hayley’s young son and helped ease Marshmallow’s anxiety, becoming her calming companion.

Over time, Maverick was weaned off his anxiety medication, revealing a playful, loving personality that fit right into the family dynamic. Hayley feels he’s brought joy, structure, and companionship to their lives. She’s grateful to the HBSPCA for uniting them and encourages others to adopt, reminding them that shelter dogs are full of love and potential.

We adopted Frank (Travis) on April 2, 2026. We applied immediately the second we saw him online. He's settling in quite well, he's such a good boy. He has his first camping trip under his belt and has many more adventures waiting for him!

Lowey

Hello! Lowey has been with us for two weeks now and has already become such an important part of our family. After a couple days of getting used to his new space and people, as well as our routine, his shyness melted away and his personality has really shown itself. He loves to follow us around while we make dinner together in the evening and join us on the couch while we eat. If he’s not cuddling or playing with us, we can find him either curled up on a clothing rack in the closet or burrowed under the blankets on the bed. He’s been doing great with eating and litter since his first day here, and he’s scheduled to meet his new vet next month. We’re so happy and it really feels like he was exactly what we were missing. Thank you for helping us and Lowey find each other :) Grace and Nicholas

Snap, Crackle and Pop

Good afternoon everyone at the HBSPCA. Just wanted to give you an update on Snap, Crackle and Pop. They have settled in very well here at the Funeral Home. They love their bath time...Snap likes his open air bath...Crackle loves the closed in approach. They have brought us so much joy since the loss of our office pet Charlie. A small funeral was held for him today followed by his burial in our memorial garden. I am attaching a photo video for your enjoyment. We will keep you updated. Thank you again for allowing us to adopt these beautiful birds.

Coco & Ginger

Good morning, We just wanted to update you about Coco(Marigold) & Ginger(Sunny). They are doing fantastic 😊 We can’t believe how they have settled in already feeling very comfortable and at home. They have completely bonded with me already, following me everywhere, trusting me giving lots of affection, big welcome’s when I get home from running errands. My husband says Coco whimpers when I leave. We are working on walking on leash with Coco, everyday she gets better and better with responding to constant positive reinforcement and treats. Yesterday we went on the longest walk down by the Bayfront and she did so well, with minimal tugging! We are keeping the same walk for the first week to get her familiar and keep things consistent. We walk them separately at different times, as they have different needs. They are both fine with it. Coco will bark in the window at first and knows she is coming back. Ginger walks great, lots of sniffing and curiosity. We have already seen a good change in her strength, she’s putting on weight slowly, she does our stairs no problem, walking is not an issue, she jumps up on couch no problem. We have dog stairs for both couches she uses,as we do not want her jumping down. She is also starting to play with the toys I have lying around for them! They are both eating very well. I have to sit on the floor while they eat. We are working on that😊 They are getting better already, knowing they each have plenty of food. We are also doing some work with positive reinforcement and treats for accidents in the house. They get a treat every time they go outside, including on walks when they go. Accidents are to be expected for the first bit. They are happy, energetic girls that we have already fallen in love with. They are adjusting so well and just bring pure joy to our home

Canary

It has been such an incredible experience to watch Canary growing into a confident girl since we adopted her. She was so shy when we first adopted her, but today she’s our favourite travel buddy. We took things super slow to help her adapt by starting with quiet time in the backyard, moving up to short car rides, and using tons of treats to reward her whenever she braved a new sound or sight. We’re so excited for all the road trips and new places we’re going to explore next with our little co-pilot.

Lily

Hi there! Just wanted to send some pictures. Lily (formerly Indy) enjoys ball time, snack time and nap time in our king size bed. We also taught her how to high five! We love our doodle ❀

Tulip

Hello! My daughter and I wanted to send a thank you note for trusting us to adopt 'Shenanigans' about 3 weeks ago. Now re-named 'Tulip', she is an absolute joy to have in the house. Tulip is playful, affectionate and follows us from room to room at a gallop. She has decided that our dog, Clover, is perfect to hide from and pounce out at, a game that Clover is happy to play every day. Tulip's favourite toy is a small, plastic ball with a bell inside, which is very loud when rolling around the ceramic and hardwood floors, but we don't mind since she is so cute when she is chasing and wrestling it (and trying to carry it up the stairs in her mouth). Tulip has fit into our family almost effortlessly, and we are so thankful that you gave us the opportunity to bring her home! Thanks again, Stacey, Eleanor, Clover and Tulip Turcotte

Waylon

Hello, I just wanted to share that yesterday was Waylon's (aka Forte) 1 year Happy Gotcha Day! He is such a sweet loving little potcake! He loves playfully beating up his big brother and stealing anything he can from him, lol! Waylon is having the time of his life. Happy Gotcha Day!!

Ozzy

Hi, we adopted Lord Henry, who is now known as Lord Ozzy, we let him keep his title. I just wanted to let you know he's settling in remarkably well, already finding places he likes to sleep. He's already remarkably friendly and relaxed, he spent about an hour scouting out his new area before starting to settle in, and has grown more comfortable and confident ever since. He's been an absolute pleasure. Adam B.
