About the HBSPCA
For more than 130 years, the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA has been a cornerstone of compassion in our community — working to create a world where every animal is valued, respected, and cared for.
Humane education has been part of our story for over a century. Around 1922, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the then “Hamilton SPCA” formed the Junior Humane Society, enrolling more than 9,000 schoolchildren as members. This was Ontario’s very first initiative to bring humane education directly into classrooms.
In 1927, the success of this local effort inspired the Ontario Minister of Education, Premier Ferguson, to distribute a pamphlet titled “Humane Education” to schools across the province — a milestone sparked by Hamilton’s leadership.
One former volunteer even recalled the Ladies’ Auxiliary visiting her school in uniform, speaking about kindness to animals, and fundraising for the HBSPCA by selling glossy animal photographs — cats, dogs, and horses — for just ten cents apiece.
This proud legacy of teaching compassion to children continues today as we work with educators to design the next generation of humane education in Ontario.
