It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bruce Murphy, a cherished and special member of the HBSPCA volunteer family on December 2, 2024 at the age of 75.Bruce and his late wife shared an extraordinary passion for the welfare of animals.
After losing his beloved wife and their family dog in 2022, Bruce reached out to the HBSPCA in the fall of 2023 to volunteer. He became an integral part of our Volunteer Recruitment Department, contributing immensely to our team and mission.Bruce was not only a dedicated volunteer but also the heart and soul of our Thursdays.
Known for his humor and playful spirit, he brightened our days with jokes and good-natured pranks. His thoughtful gestures, like sending flowers to inspire and uplift the team, demonstrated his kindness and generosity. Rain, shine, or snow, Bruce attended every volunteer networking event, always showing his unwavering support for our work.
He gave tirelessly of his time and talents, supporting multiple departments and sharing his wisdom with staff. Whether reminding us to stay safe during a snowstorm or lending a hand when he wasnât feeling his best, Bruce was the epitome of dedication. In recognition of his incredible contributions, Bruce was honored at our inaugural Volunteer Recognition Evening with the Guardian Angel Award, a fitting tribute to his selfless spirit and unwavering commitment.

It is with the deepest sadness that we share the passing of our treasured volunteer and friend, John Goar, who left us over the weekend with his beloved wife, Annette, faithfully by his side. Annette, who shared more than 38 beautiful years with John, has expressed how profoundly blessed she feels to have had such a partnership. In her own words:
âIt has been a joy and blessing from the day I met John. John is my soul mate, my best friend, and the best partner and team member anyone could ever have. John is a gift from God.â
For those who have been part of the HBSPCA communityâwhether for decades or just daysâJohn and Annetteâs presence was unmistakable. Always together, always giving, they devoted their lives to serving others and making the world a better place. For more than 23 years, they were a constant force of generosity and care, volunteering every day to ensure both people and animals received compassion and support.
At the HBSPCA, John and Annette could be found delivering pet food for community cats, supporting our Pet Pantry food bank program, facilitating outreach events, and showing up to every initiative with wholehearted passion. Their impact stretched far beyond our wallsâinto countless homes, lives, and hearts across the community.
In 2024, we had the privilege of honoring their extraordinary dedication at the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards and once again at our inaugural 2024 Spirit of Service Award. When interviewed, they spoke not of themselves, but of the profound peace and joy animals had brought into their livesâand their desire to share that gift with others. One of their fondest acts of kindness was sharing their own pets with those who needed comfort as part of our Pet Visiting outreach program.
As Melissa Foley, Director of Volunteer Services shared,
" John was one of the most special individuals I have ever met. Every time we connected, he greeted me with the biggest smile, even in the midst his own struggles. He never spoke of himself, but always asked, âHow are you doing?â His presence felt like a big hug, and his passion for helping others was more than inspiring.â
Johnâs warmth, generosity, and joyful spirit were a blessing to all of us. His absence will be deeply felt, yet his legacy will continue to live on in the lives he touched. At HBSPCA, we will always carry his memory with gratitude and love, knowing we have gained an angel watching over us.
Andrea Matecki, Director of Finance, built a special bond with both Annette and John.
âJohn was love, patience and kindness personified. His inner strength and resilience was unmatched. He selflessly dedicated his life to helping others.â
We hold Johnâs life partner, Annette, close in our hearts and prayers. May she feel the immense love, peace, and gratitude we have for both her and Johnâfor the lives they touched, the joy they brought, and the countless ways they changed our community for the better.
