2026 is the Year of the Volunteer. We’re recognizing the 400+ people whose time, energy, and heart make the HBSPCA’s work possible.

2026 is officially the Year of the Volunteer, and it’s the perfect time to recognize the people who make the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA’s work possible. Volunteers aren’t just “extra help”—they’re the backbone of everything we do, showing up for animals and our community in countless ways.

Whether it’s caring for animals in shelters or foster homes, helping at adoption events, supporting fundraising efforts, or lending a hand behind the scenes, volunteers bring energy, dedication, and heart to every part of our organization. Their time allows staff to focus resources where they’re needed most—helping animals heal, find homes, and thrive.

Why Volunteers Matter

Volunteering is essential. The HBSPCA currently has 377 dedicated volunteers (and increasing daily), each contributing hours, skills, and compassion that directly benefit the animals and the community. Animal welfare organizations rely on volunteers to fill gaps in care, provide enrichment, and ensure animals get the attention they need. Beyond the practical impact, volunteers also strengthen communities by bringing people together around shared compassion for animals.

“Volunteers are the heart of everything we do. Their time, compassion, and commitment allow us to reach more animals and serve our community in ways we simply couldn’t do alone.”

Volunteers help us meet challenges big and small, from running adoption events and fostering pets, to supporting outreach and community programs. Every hour contributed creates measurable outcomes for animals, staff, and the broader community.

A Thank You to Our Volunteers

To everyone who gives a few hours, weekends, or years of service: thank you. Your contributions make the HBSPCA a place of care, compassion, and possibility. Every animal that heals, every adoption that succeeds, and every community program that reaches its goal is a result of your commitment.

Make 2026 Your Year to Celebrate Volunteers

Even if you’re not volunteering yourself, take a moment this year to acknowledge the people who do. And if you’re curious, there’s always an opportunity to see what volunteering looks like at the HBSPCA. Flexible roles range from hands-on animal care to supporting events and administrative projects.

Volunteering doesn’t just help animals—it can also enrich your own life with new skills, connections, and experiences that stay long after your shift ends.
