The HBSPCA Canine Chaperone Program helps shelter dogs build confidence, reduce stress, and prepare for adoption.

The Canine Chaperone program gives shelter dogs a much-needed break from the kennel, pairing them with volunteers for a day of exploring, relaxing, and experiencing life beyond the shelter. These outings might include a pup cup, a romp in the park, or a cozy snuggle on the sofa. They provide valuable enrichment while increasing each dog’s visibility in the community, helping pave the way for successful adoptions.

Chipmunk, a sweet young puppy, recently had a well-deserved outing after her spay surgery, taking enjoying time to decompress from the busy shelter environment. Like many shelter pups, she spent much of her visit catching up on sleep - a reassuring sign she felt safe and at ease.

During her stay with volunteer Emily, Chipmunk began building important life skills. She adjusted to a home setting, grew more confident exploring the outdoors, and even climbed stairs for the first time. In between, she soaked up cuddles and discovered a new favourite toy.

Because of you, puppies like Chipmunk can relax, recharge, and grow more comfortable in everyday environments - setting them up for success in their future homes.

Emily shares:

“The Canine Chaperone Program provides an amazing opportunity for dogs to have a well-deserved break from the stimulating shelter environment, while allowing volunteers flexibility in how they can contribute and interact with the animals. It’s my favourite way to spend a Sunday morning!”

Because of you, moments like these are possible - helping dogs feel safe, build confidence, and take their next steps toward home.

Thank you for making stories like these possible. Every day, your kindness is changing lives.
