Elena built a life around love - and when she thought about the future, she thought about the animals too. Here's her story.

Some of the most extraordinary gifts begin with the most ordinary love, for a person, a pet, and a life quietly built around each other.

Every so often, a story comes through our doors that stays with us long after it ends. Not because it is loud or remarkable, but because it is so deeply, achingly human. This is one of those stories. And like all stories of love, it does not end where you might expect.

A Life Built From Scratch

Elena came to Canada as a young woman, long before she had the words for everything she was leaving behind. There was no family waiting at the airport, no map for what comes next. What she had was courage, and the quiet determination of someone who has decided to begin again.

Here, she built a life. She fell in love. Together, she and her husband created a home filled with ordinary, meaningful moments. It was the kind of home that rarely made headlines but held a whole world inside.

Theirs was a family of two. And then, one day, it became three.

The Companion Who Changed Everything

We don't know exactly what drew Elena to adopt a kitten. But when she did, she wasn't simply bringing home a pet. She was welcoming a new member of her family. That small presence would come to shape her days in ways she could never have imagined.

‍

When Elena's husband passed, that companionship became something even deeper. In the long quiet of widowhood – when so many people would have been entirely alone - Elena was not. There was still a gentle routine, a familiar presence beside her, and a reason to begin each day.

It is a kind of bond we at the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA see every day and never take for granted. What we have learned over 130 years of this work is the quiet magic of an animal. They don't care where you came from or who you have left. They simply choose you, every single day.

Thinking of the Future - and Thinking of Them

As Elena grew older, she did what so many thoughtful people do: she began to think about what would come after. For some, those plans revolve around children and grandchildren. Elena's revolved around the one she loved most in the world - her cat.

It's a question we hear often from devoted pet owners: "What will happen to them if I'm no longer here?" Elena didn't want uncertainty. She wanted a promise that her cat would always be safe, always cared for, always loved.

So, she planned. In doing so, she gave two lasting gifts. She ensured that her beloved companion would always have a place to go through our Pet Survivorship Program. The second was her legacy: a gift left to us in her will, so that other animals might find the same family she had found, and other people might know the same companionship that carried her through her hardest years.

A Transformational Gift

Elena's bequest to the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA was a transformational gift.

A gift of this size is not simply spent and forgotten. It allows us to sustain programs families rely on, expand services to meet new needs, and continue advancing our Pet-First mission – the belief that every animal deserves not just shelter, but a future.

‍

It arrives, too, at a pivotal moment. Right now, our community is building something extraordinary: the Unleash Love Capital Campaign and the Pet-First Campus Animal Wellness Hub - the first animal welfare hub of its kind, rising right here in Hamilton and Burlington. Gifts like Elena's are part of the foundation it stands on. Quite literally, her love for one small cat will help shelter, heal, and rehome animals for generations she will never meet.

That is the quiet power of a legacy gift. It outlives us. It turns a single, private love into something that ripples outward for decades.

What That Kind of Gift Makes Possible

Because of donors like Elena, we can strengthen our programs and surround families with practical support when needed. Legacy gifts make it possible to:

  • Sustain vital programs for families and animals
  • Grow new services that meet emerging needs
  • Continue building our Pet-First Campus Animal Wellness Hub

That impact shows up in real, tangible ways for our community:

  1. Through our partnership with Willfora, anyone can create a legal Will online at no cost, making it easier to plan ahead and ensure their wishes - and their loved one - are cared for.
  2. We are proud to be one of the very few shelters to offer a Pet Survivorship Program - a promise that, should the unthinkable happen, the HBSPCA will step in to care for and place your pet in a loving home. No animal left wondering. No family left without a plan.
Both exist for one reason: to help families and their beloved pets prepare for a future when we may no longer be here.

Would You Think of Us?

This is the part that is hardest to say, and so we will simply say it gently.

Somewhere out there, someone is reading this and quietly thinking about their own future. Perhaps you have children and other relatives, or perhaps - like Elena - your family has four legs and a heartbeat all its own. Perhaps you are wondering who will carry your love forward when you are gone.

If that feels familiar, we invite you to take one small step:

  • Request a Will Preparing Guide
  • Create your will online at no cost through Willfora
  • Or have a confidential conversation with our team
We would be deeply grateful if you chose to remember the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA in your Will. To be entrusted with someone's legacy is among the greatest privileges an organization can receive. In return, we make this promise: we will steward your gift with care, respect your wishes, and carry forward the love you shared with the animal who meant so much to you.

Because that is what a legacy gift truly is. It is love, passed forward.

Thank you, Elena. We will carry your love forward.

Begin Your Legacy of Kindness

If Elena's story has stirred something in you, our team would be honoured to speak with you - quietly, thoughtfully and with no obligation.

  • Create your free Will through our Willfora partnership: hbspca.com/get-involved/legacy-giving
  • Learn about the Pet Survivorship Program and plan for the future
  • Speak with someone who understands: Helen V., Associate Director of Giving, will answer your questions in confidence (905-574-7722).

It takes a lot of heart to make a difference. Thank you for thinking of the animals - today, and for all the tomorrows to come.
