From Foster Fail to Community Ambassador: Larry’s Journey

The Littlest Larry

Larry was born as part of a premature litter at the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA. He was tiny and needed extra support to catch up and thrive.

At just four weeks old, Larry went home with the Manager of the Pet Visiting Program as a foster. No one could have known at the time that this tiny puppy would become such an important part of the Pet Visiting Program’s future.

In just a few days, something incredible began to happen. With consistent care, Larry started gaining weight and growing stronger. He quickly began to thrive - and before long, it became clear that he wasn't going anywhere.

Larry officially became a foster fail.

The Start of Something Special

As Larry grew, his potential became more and more apparent. The Pet Visiting Program is built around the incredible connection that animals can create in our community. Animals have a way of bringing people together, making people smile and offering comfort without needing to say a word. With the right support, Larry had the potential to become part of that work in a very special way.

The HBSPCA made the decision to fully support Larry so that he could become part of the Pet Visiting Program. It was an incredible commitment - not just to Larry, but to the idea that a shelter animal with a challenging start could grow into something truly special when given the right opportunities.

At just 10 weeks old, Larry began training with our wonderful partners at K9 Principles. He participated in both group training and one-on-one sessions with Kelly R., their Head Trainer.

Larry has now completed Level 1 and Level 2 group lessons, alongside individualized training focused on helping him build the skills and confidence he needs for his very unique role.

Meet Larry’s Posse!

Larry may be the ambassador, but he doesn't do this work alone.

Alongside his mom, he has a trusted group of volunteers affectionately known as Larry's Posse. Together, they help him explore the world, continue his training and, most importantly, bring animal connection to people throughout our community.

Larry and his gang have visited spaces such as senior living homes, shelters and mental health facilities - creating moments of joy, comfort and connection for people who may need it most. Each experience helps Larry continue to grow.

Every new environment, new person and new interaction is part of his journey. And at every step, he is supported.

A Different Kind of Ambassador

Larry's role is something truly special for the HBSPCA. He is the first of his kind at our shelter - an animal fully supported by our organization to grow into a community ambassador through the Pet Visiting Program.

His journey has been a team effort. From the care he received as a puppy to the commitment of our organization, his dedicated trainers and volunteers, Larry has been surrounded by people who believe in him.

And Larry has come such a long way in such a short period of time.

Every Animal Has Potential

Larry's story is about more than one very cute puppy who grew up to do something special.

It's a reminder of the potential that exists within shelter animals.

Not every animal arrives with a perfect history or a perfect start. Some come with health concerns. Some need extra time. Some need training, patience and a whole lot of support before they are ready to show the world who they really are.

Larry was small and delayed. Today, he is growing into a confident, beloved community ambassador who is already bringing comfort and joy to people throughout Hamilton and Burlington.

With the right care, support and commitment, rescue animals can do amazing things.

Sometimes, all they need is someone willing to see their potential and give them the chance to become who they were always meant to be.

Larry's journey is only just beginning.
