From Kindness to Forever Homes: The Power of Paying It Forward

Sponsored adoptions give shelter dogs a second chance—and inspire a ripple of kindness that keeps tails wagging and hearts full.
In recent months, our shelter has welcomed several large breed dogs who arrived here through no fault of their own. Among them were Mercedes and Tika, two gentle girls who quickly became staff and volunteer favorites. Large breed dogs often take longer to adopt because they may need more space, more exercise and can feel intimidating at first glance. Our incredible donors and volunteers understand this. They also know that dogs of this size and stature can be some of the most loyal, affectionate and rewarding companions anyone could hope for. Mercedes and Tika prove that completely.

Although they did not arrive together, these two dogs share many similarities. Both are calm, loving and eager to form bonds with the people around them. Both cherished by kennel volunteers who spent time walking them, comforting them and learning who they are beyond the stress of shelter life. Beautifully, both Mercedes and Tika had their adoption fees sponsored by donors who fell in love and wanted to give them a better chance at finding their forever homes.
Mercedes’ sponsor, Trina, shared this heartfelt message:
“If I did not have four already I would be taking her home. She is perfect. I met Mercedes when volunteering in the dog kennels and immediately was drawn to her. You can see in her eyes how gentle and sweet she is. She is not barking. She is just watching. Patiently waiting. I sponsored her to help her next family come find her sooner. I want Mercedes to be cozy at home with someone who will love her like I love my girl.”
Gillian, who sponsored Tika, said:
“I was walking her Friday as a volunteer and there is something about her that reminded me of my dog who passed away in October. As much as I would love to adopt her myself, I have a rescue who is dog and people selective so I am unable to. I also want to help Tika find a home because she is so sweet and I do not want there to be a barrier to her being adopted. It is just something small I can do to help her.”
We do not see these actions as small at all. They are remarkable. Sponsored adoption fees can make a tremendous difference for animals who have already waited far too long.

And in a heartwarming turn of events, Tika has just been adopted.
In an incredible act of kindness, Tika’s adopters chose to pay it forward by sponsoring another senior dog’s adoption fees. Their generosity ensures that the ripple effect continues.
Now, we would love for you to meet Aurora, a sweet senior who is currently up for adoption. Just like Mercedes, she is still waiting for her forever home. Thanks to the compassion of our donors and now Tika’s adopters, both of these deserving girls are one step closer to finding their families.

Mercedes has been with us for months. Aurora is patiently hoping for her chance. Their stories remind us that one act of kindness can open the door for another. A sponsored fee removes a barrier. A shared post sparks interest. A visit changes everything.
To every donor and volunteer who gives their time, compassion and care to animals like Mercedes and Aurora, we are deeply grateful. Because of you, hope keeps growing and more tails will wag in homes where they belong.
