“The Animals Need Us”: A Message from Ken and Terry-Anne

A shelter visit changed everything. See how one couple’s experience inspired monthly giving to support animal care, recovery, and second chances.
Sometimes, seeing the work up close changes everything.
For Ken and Terry-Anne, a visit to the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA transformed long-standing support into a deeper commitment.
Already donors since 2024, they visited the shelter in 2025 to learn more about how animals are cared for here. By the end of that visit, they had decided to become monthly donors.
Animal lovers with cats at home, they arrived curious.
They left deeply moved.
What stood out first was the thoughtfulness of the space itself: an outdoor catio, adoption rooms, training areas, procedure and operating rooms, and one room in particular that stayed with Terry-Anne —the rainbow room.

A quiet space designed for difficult moments.
“The rainbow room brought tears to my eyes,” she shared.
But even more powerful than the building was the atmosphere inside it.
The cats and kittens they met were comfortable, playful, and clearly well cared for. Staff and volunteers moved naturally among them with warmth and purpose, creating a feeling that every animal mattered.
That experience made the decision clear.
“I knew at that point I wanted to become a monthly donor — to help with medical needs, shelter, and food. From one animal lover to another, please give monthly, together we will make a difference. The animals need us.”

Their visit also included a thoughtful surprise: Ken and Terry-Anne gifted some extra-special toys to the kittens staying at the shelter that day — a kind act that brought immediate delight to their new furry friends.
Stories like theirs remind us that monthly giving often begins with seeing compassion in action.
That invitation remains open.
Supporters are always welcome to arrange a tour, hopefully meet some animals, and see firsthand how monthly generosity supports every exam, every meal, every recovery, and every adoption.

To Ken and Terry-Anne — and to every Furever Friend — thank you for choosing compassion that continues, month after month.
