4 Hours and 47 Minutes: The Community Support Behind Our New Dishwasher

At the Hamilton Burlington SPCA, keeping animals healthy isn't just about food, shelter, and medical care; it's also about the everyday, behind-the-scenes work that keeps our facility clean and safe. One piece of equipment that plays a bigger role in that than people might expect: our dishwasher.

On June 16th, we put out an emergency call to our community, asking for $10,000 to bring a new dishwasher into our shelter. What happened next left us speechless. It took just 4 hours and 47 minutes for our community to raise the full amount, and even then, the support didn't stop. Donations kept coming in well after we hit our goal, a testament to just how many people believe in the work we do and the animals we care for.

For the past month, our team has been running on that new dishwasher, and it's already changed the way we operate day to day. With hundreds of bowls, dishes, and supplies used across the shelter every single day, having the right equipment to keep everything clean isn't a luxury; it's essential to how we care for the animals in our building.

Sarah, one of our Animal Care Attendants, has seen the difference firsthand. Before the new dishwasher arrived, washing that volume of dishes was a slow, entirely hands-on process, taking up hours of staff time that could otherwise go toward the animals themselves.

Now, thanks to the generosity of our donors, that job is faster, easier, and far more effective.

Beyond the time it saves, the dishwasher plays an important role in keeping the shelter sanitary. Shelters are busy, high-traffic environments where animals are in close proximity to one another, which makes hygiene a critical part of preventing illness from spreading. The high heat used in the wash and dry cycle helps disinfect bowls and equipment far more thoroughly than handwashing alone.

"The heat that the dishwasher uses to disinfect is really effective against a lot of things that are transmitted around the shelter," Sarah explained. "It's been a huge help, and we're so happy to have one back up and running."

That efficiency adds up fast. What used to take hours of hands-on scrubbing each day is now handled in a fraction of the time, freeing up staff to spend more time on hands-on animal care, socialization, and the countless other tasks that keep our shelter running smoothly. In a place where every minute matters, that time savings translates directly into better care for the animals waiting for their forever homes.

A dishwasher may not be the first thing people picture when they think about supporting a shelter, but for our staff and the animals we care for, it's had a real, tangible impact on our day-to-day operations.
