New Program Brings Preventative Dental Services to the Community - Before Small Problems Become Costly Crises

Hamilton, ON - The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) is proud to announce the expansion of its Companion Animal Hospital services with the launch of veterinary dental care now available to the public. Pet owners in Hamilton and Burlington can now access professional dental consultations, cleanings, and treatment through the HBSPCA - bringing high-quality, accessible care to families who need it most. Space is limited, and appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dental disease is one of the most common and most overlooked health concerns affecting cats and dogs. Left untreated, it can progress into significant pain, infection, and systemic illness - with advanced cases requiring treatment that can cost thousands of dollars. For some families, that financial burden becomes impossible to manage, and pets suffer or are surrendered as a result.

The HBSPCA's dental program is built on a simple but powerful belief: prevention is better than crisis. By offering accessible dental services, the organization aims to reduce suffering before it begins, support responsible pet ownership, and help keep pets healthy and at home where they belong.

Meet the Veterinarian Leading the Program

The dental program is led by Dr. Dave Kerr, a veterinarian who brings extensive experience and clinical leadership to the HBSPCA team. Known for his dedication to teaching and mentorship, Dr. Kerr plays an active role in educating veterinarians and students in the field of dentistry - strengthening the profession while delivering meaningful care to animals in need.

"I am excited to offer general dentistry services at the HBSPCA while at the same time helping to educate veterinarians in the field of dentistry," said Dr. Kerr. "Being able to help animals in need and mentor at the same time aligns well with my current life's mission."

How the Program Works

All dental patients begin with a consultation appointment at the HBSPCA Companion Animal Hospital, where a veterinarian will assess the animal's overall health, evaluate the extent of any dental disease, determine whether a procedure is appropriate, and provide a personalized treatment plan and cost estimate. The consultation fee is $85.00, required at the time of booking.

Pre-anesthetic bloodwork is strongly recommended - and in some cases required - to confirm a patient is healthy enough for anesthesia safely.

Vaccinations can be brought up to date prior to the dental procedure, and microchip implantation can be safely completed while your pet is under anesthesia.

Dental procedures are priced by treatment level, ranging from professional cleaning to complex extraction cases, for both feline and canine patients. Transparent pricing is available at hbspca.com.
