From Barn to Brothers: How Monthly Donors Helped Rorschach Find a Loving Home

Thanks to monthly donors, Rorschach survived illness, received care through our Community Cat Program, and now thrives in his forever home.
Some donor stories stay with me because of what they make possible.
This one now lives in my home.
As Manager of Monthly Giving at the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA, I often have the privilege of sharing stories about animals whose lives are changed because monthly donors choose to give with such steady compassion. Usually, I tell those stories from a professional perspective. This time, the story became personal.
When Rorschach first arrived in our care, he was less than six months old and already had more hardship behind him than any kitten should. He came through our Community Cat Program after surviving in a barn alongside a large colony of feral cats. Despite those uncertain beginnings, he immediately stood out — confident, curious, and remarkably affectionate. His striking black-and-white markings, which reminded us of an inkblot test, inspired his name.
But beneath that brave little personality, Rorschach needed urgent help.

He arrived suffering from a serious case of Feline upper respiratory infection, commonly known as cat flu. He slept constantly, sneezed without stopping, and struggled to open his eyes because of the thick discharge caused by infection.
At our Companion Animal Hospital, treatment began immediately. He received two antibiotics, including eye drops — and if you have ever tried giving eye drops to a kitten, you can appreciate the patience that required.
What stayed with me during those early days was the gentleness of the care he received. Our animal care staff took their time with him, building trust while making sure every treatment was given exactly as needed. There was no rushing, only patience and kindness.

That kind of attentive care happens every day because monthly donors make it possible.
As Rorschach recovered, his personality became more impossible to resist. Once healthy enough, he went through his neuter surgery and officially became ready for adoption.
By then, I already knew how I felt. I had fallen completely in love with him.
At home, I already had Leo, my dog — very established in his role as ruler of the household — so bringing home a kitten felt like it might require some negotiation. But Rorschach seemed to arrive with confidence, as though he had already decided he belonged there. And somehow, Leo agreed.
The two quickly formed a bond that still surprises and delights me every day. They groom one another, nap together, and move through the house with the easy companionship of animals who simply understand each other.

‍
When I look at Rorschach now, it is impossible not to think about how much had to happen to bring him here.
A kitten surviving in a barn. A rescue through our Community Cat Program. Medical treatment, surgery, shelter care, and finally adoption.
Every stage of that journey depended on people who may never meet him, but who made his future possible all the same.

As someone who speaks often about the impact of monthly giving, I now experience that impact in one of the most personal ways possible: every day, in my own home.
I see it when Rorschach curls up beside Leo. I see it in the confidence of a kitten who now knows he is safe.
And I feel grateful in a way that is difficult to fully express.
Thank you for supporting the Community Cat Program that brought him into care. Thank you for making our Companion Animal Hospital possible. Thank you for ensuring animals like Rorschach receive not only medical treatment, but every opportunity to heal, trust, and begin again.
For me, your generosity is no longer just something I talk about.
It is something I come home to every day.
