Hamilton/Burlington SPCA is now Humane Canada Accredited — one of only three organizations in Canada to meet these rigorous national standards.

Hamilton, ON — The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) is proud to announce that it has achieved Humane Canada Accreditation, placing the organization among only three animal welfare organizations in Canada to earn this rigorous, independent distinction.

Humane Canada Accreditation is a comprehensive, third-party evaluation designed specifically for humane societies and SPCAs. It assesses organizations against evidence-based national standards for animal welfare, governance, transparency, and accountability.

The accreditation process includes a detailed self-assessment, peer review by sector experts, and an on-site evaluation examining policies, programs, facilities, and day-to-day operations. Accreditation is granted for five years and includes formal progress reporting to ensure ongoing accountability and continuous improvement.

“Across Canada, there are hundreds of animal welfare organizations — from humane societies and SPCAs operating shelters to specialized rescues and foster‑based groups — all working to care for animals. Only three have achieved Humane Canada Accreditation. We are one of them. This isn't an award you hang on a wall—it's a commitment to continuous excellence that our community, our donors, and every animal walking through our doors can count on,” said John Gerrard, President & CEO of the HBSPCA.

This achievement provides independent verification that the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA operates ethically and transparently, with clear standards guiding how animals are cared for, how the organization is governed, and how community trust and donor support are stewarded.

While this recognition positions the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA as a national leader in animal welfare, it also reinforces along-standing commitment to continuous improvement. The organization remains focused on strengthening its programs, advancing best practices, and contributing meaningfully to the future of animal welfare across Canada.

The HBSPCA credits this milestone to the dedication of its staff and volunteers, whose compassion, professionalism, and expertise shape the care provided to every animal. It also reflects the trust placed in the organization by its supporters, adopters, partners, and community, whose belief in this work makes it possible.

As one of only three Humane Canada Accredited organizations in the country, the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA remains committed to delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality care — today and into the future.
