Happy Paws, Happy Pets: Why Regular Nail Trims Matter More Than You Think

Nail trims at the HBSPCA help prevent severe pain, protect mobility, and improve the overall health and comfort of your pet's paws.
Here at the Hamilton Burlington SPCA, we’ve all heard that familiar click-click-click of paws on the floor. While it might just sound like a quirky habit, those long nails are actually a big deal for your furry family member. Keeping your pet’s nails trimmed is a vital piece of their everyday health, comfort, and happiness.
When a pet's nails grow too long, it transforms a simple walk or a playful jump into a painful chore. Let’s break down why a little trim goes a long way, and how our team is making paw care stress-free and affordable for everyone.
The Hidden Health Risks of Long Nails
For our furry friends, regular nail maintenance prevents painful overgrowth. Leaving nails to grow out isn't just an aesthetic issue it carries real health risks that our vet services team sees all too often:
- For our Canine Friends: Short nails allow dogs to stand and move naturally. When nails get too long, they push the toes upward, altering your dog’s posture and straining their joints. If you have a less active pup or a smaller breed who doesn't spend a lot of time walking on rough sidewalks, their nails won't wear down naturally. This makes them highly prone to painful tears, splits, or ripping off entirely.
- For our Feline Friends: Cat nails grow incredibly fast. Because they naturally curve, an untrimmed nail can actually curl all the way around and pierce right into the sensitive pad of their foot. This causes severe, constant pain and can easily lead to nasty infections.

"We want to make sure those nails stay nice and short so they're not going to tear, they're not going to rip off, and they're much more comfortable for the dog." Michelle, Director of Community Vet Services at the HBSPCA
