The 53,766 sq ft building will sit across 6+ acres of master-planned campus, with 107 unique spaces under one roof and a maximum housing capacity of 300 animals. The services it will house span the full 360° spectrum of pet care, from a puppy’s very first vet visit to a senior animal’s compassionate goodbye.

What's Actually Inside

The services the Animal Welfare Hub will house cover every stage and situation a pet owner might face. Some you’d expect. Some will stop you mid-sentence.

For everyday pet care: a walk-in vet clinic, grooming, dog training, dog and cat daycare, boarding, and a full pharmacy on site.

For medical needs: a full hospital with four operating rooms, two dental suites, physiotherapy, and a water treadmill rehabilitation program.

For the community: community outreach vaccines, a pet pantry providing 6 million+ free meals per year, humane education programs, a Community Cat TNVR program, foster programs, and a pet thrift store.

For the moments that matter most: shelter and adoption services, spay and neuter programs, dog and cat cafés, and four private end-of-life care rooms where animals can pass with dignity, surrounded by the people who love them.

What It Will Feel Like to Live in a City That Has This

Your dog tears a nail on a Monday morning walk. You drive to one place, walk through the door, and someone helps you within 60 seconds. Your dog gets seen. You get answers. You go home.

Your senior cat starts losing weight. You bring her in for a wellness check. The vet recommends a dental. You book it before you leave the parking lot, because the dental suite is in the same building.

You’re going through a hard stretch and can’t afford food for your animals this month. You walk into the pet pantry, no application needed, and leave with what your pets need.

This is what Hamilton and Burlington will have when the Hub opens. A place built around the full reality of what it means to share your life with an animal: the ordinary Tuesdays and the hard ones, the first days and the last.

Meet Hector: One Animal, the Full Spectrum

Hector came to us through our Community Cat Program, scared and hurt, carrying a serious wound on his neck. He needed more than shelter. He needed a full team.

From the moment he arrived, our team mobilized around him. He received his vaccines. He was neutered. Our veterinary staff assessed the wound and began the careful, patient work of treating it: cleaning, monitoring, preventing infection, week after week, until he was stable and safe.

His journey to his forever home ran through our Community Cat Program, our veterinary team, our surgical care, and the staff and volunteers who showed up for him every single day until he was ready. Our team coordinated every piece of it, because they knew his name and his story. Hector is one animal.

The Hub is how we do this for thousands more.

From the First Day to the Last

Hector’s story is about what the Hub can do in a concentrated stretch of time. River’s story is about what it means to be there for an entire life.

River first came into our care in September 2021. Over the years that followed, they received the full range of support we work to provide every animal who comes through our doors: routine wellness exams, dentistry, diagnostics, and ongoing medical care as their needs changed. In 2025, River was adopted and spent several months in a home. When that placement ended through no fault of their own, they came back to familiar surroundings, familiar faces, and a team that knew them completely.

Earlier this year, River’s health began to decline. Age-related conditions progressed despite careful monitoring and ongoing support.

After more than four years in our care, with comfort and dignity as the guiding priority, our veterinary team made the compassionate decision to help River pass peacefully.

Because River was family, arrangements were made for cremation. Their remains were returned to us. In a quiet gathering, we carried them to the upper field of our leash-free area, the very land where the new campus will take shape, and laid them to rest.

River’s story reflects something fundamental about the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA. Our work is about continuity, dignity, and the relationships that form along the way. From the first day through the last, we were there. The Animal Welfare Hub is how we make that kind of lifelong commitment possible for every animal who needs it.

There is no other campus like this in Canada. The Animal Welfare Hub is the first 360° spectrum-of-care destination the country has ever seen, and it’s being built right here in Hamilton, on Dartnall Road.
