HBSPCA Receives PEDIGREE Foundation Grant to Support Dog Obedience Training and Adoption

Helping Dogs Find Forever Homes Through Training and Trust

The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) is proud to announce it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the PEDIGREE Foundation (2023). This generous funding will support the HBSPCA’s Obedience Training and Adoption program, which helps prepare dogs in foster care for successful adoptions through structured obedience training.

With this support, more dogs in the HBSPCA’s foster program will receive essential training aimed at improving their behavior, building confidence, and strengthening the bond between dog and future adopter. These skills increase the chances of a lasting adoption and reduce the risk of the dog being returned to the shelter.

“On behalf of our staff, volunteers, and the entire HBSPCA community, we are incredibly grateful to the PEDIGREE Foundation for supporting our mission to help more dogs find loving, permanent homes,” said John Gerrard, CEO of the HBSPCA. “We are honoured to be one of only ten Canadian recipients of the Foundation’s 2023 grant program.”

The PEDIGREE Foundation’s support allows HBSPCA to expand access to training for dogs in its foster program, ensuring they’re better equipped for a smooth transition into their new homes.

Dogs with basic obedience skills are not only more adoptable, but they also adjust more easily to life in a home,” said Karen Reichheld, Director of Animal Care at the HBSPCA. “This training improves their well-being, supports the adoptive families, and contributes to a safer, happier community.”

One such success story is Indy, a dog that went through the grant-funded program. Indy began obedience classes with the help pf K9 Principles and dedicated HBSPCA staff. Through consistency and hard work, Indy became a success!
