Pretzel’s Journey: Because of You, She Didn’t Give Up

Pretzel was only five months old when she was found - injured, alone, and too afraid to trust anyone.

She didn’t run when she was discovered at the end of a driveway. She couldn’t.

Her back leg had been fractured in multiple places. In pain and vulnerable, she had little chance of surviving on her own.

But someone noticed. And because they chose to act, everything changed.

Because of one compassionate person and the financial support of donors to our Community Cat Program, Pretzel got her second chance.

Last year, hundreds of cats in our community received care they otherwise wouldn’t have - spayed or neutered, treated for injuries, and supported through our Community Cat Program.

Because of you, fewer kittens are born into hardship.
Because of you, injured cats receive the care they need.
Because of you, caregivers are never alone in helping the cats they love.

Pretzel is one of those cats.

She Needed More Than Medicine

When Pretzel arrived, she was terrified. Every movement felt overwhelming. Every attempt at touch was met with fear. She didn’t understand that she was safe yet, but we knew she deserved the chance to learn.

At the same time, she was in significant pain. Her injuries were severe, and while surgery was needed, we couldn’t rush the decision. For community cats, survival isn’t just about treatment - it’s about what comes next.

Returning Pretzel to the outdoors after an amputation wouldn’t have been safe. She needed more than medicine.

She needed time. Patience. Trust.

Sometimes healing begins long before surgery, with quiet care and the chance to feel safe.

A Chance to Trust

So we slowed down. Day by day, through gentle, consistent care, Pretzel began to change. The fear didn’t disappear overnight but small moments began to emerge. Curiosity. Stillness. A willingness to stay.

Those moments mattered. They told us she was ready for something more.

With those signs, our veterinary team made the decision to proceed with amputation as the most compassionate way to free her from pain and give her a future.

Healing Inside and Out

Pretzel was placed in a foster home to prepare for surgery where, in great good fortune for her, her caregiver was a nurse.

It meant she had exactly what she needed: skilled care, close monitoring, and a safe place to begin healing.

Her surgery was a success.

But what happened next is what truly defines her story.

The Life She Deserved

Pretzel didn’t just recover. She blossomed.

The frightened kitten who once couldn’t be handled became affectionate and engaged. She discovered play, began seeking out attention, and even formed a bond with another cat.

She was no longer surviving. She was living.

Because of you, Pretzel went from fearful and in pain to safe, loved, and thriving.

Today, Pretzel is in a loving forever home. She moves through life confidently on three legs - full of energy, curiosity, and joy.

Because of You

Pretzel’s story is one of many.

Every day, community cats arrive needing help, injured, vulnerable, and with nowhere else to turn. And every day, it’s the compassion of this community that makes their care possible.

Because of you, they receive more than treatment.
They receive time, patience, and the chance for a better life.

Because of you, cats like Pretzel don’t just survive - they find their way home.

Thank you for making stories like hers possible.
