This new agreement between the City’s Animal Services and our organization is the result of many months of thoughtful discussion, mutual respect, and a shared vision. It clearly outlines our roles and responsibilities, paving the way for more effective and efficient animal services. But perhaps most importantly, it reinforces what we’ve known all along: that working together is the key to meeting the growing demands of our community—and the needs of its most vulnerable members.
Stronger Together: A New Chapter in Animal Welfare for Hamilton

At the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA), we believe in the power of partnerships—especially when it comes to creating a safer, healthier, and more compassionate community for animals. That’s why we’re excited to share a milestone moment: the City of Hamilton and the HBSPCA have formalized a long-term partnership that will enhance how animal care is delivered in our city for years to come.

What This Means for Our Community
Since 2003, we’ve shared our home at 245 Dartnall Road with Hamilton Animal Services. Over the years, the demand for animal care has grown significantly, and it became clear that a long-term plan was needed. This agreement is that plan.
Over the next decade, the City will explore and eventually relocate to a new facility dedicated to its animal services operations. During that transition, both of our teams will continue to collaborate from the Dartnall Road location. Once the City moves to its new site, the HBSPCA will assume full operations at Dartnall Road—allowing us to expand our services and make an even bigger impact.
A Shared Commitment to Animal Welfare
We’re deeply grateful to City Manager Marnie Cluckie and Mayor Andrea Horwath for their continued support and leadership. We also want to recognize Ward 7 Councillor Jackson, whose steadfast advocacy for animal welfare has helped bring this vision to life.

As our President and CEO, John Gerrard, said so well: “This is the positive and collaborative outcome we had hoped for – and great news for our community and the animals we care for.”
We see this agreement not just as a logistical arrangement, but as a shared promise: to listen, to innovate, and to serve with compassion. Together, we will continue to build a community where every animal is respected, protected, and given the chance to thrive.
Looking Ahead
This partnership is a powerful step forward—but it’s only the beginning. With this renewed foundation, we’re already exploring new ways to improve services, support pet guardians, and reach more animals in need.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our journey—your dedication inspires everything we do. Stay tuned as we share updates throughout this transition. And as always, thank you for standing with us as we create a better future for animals in Hamilton and Burlington.
Warm regards,
The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA Team 🐾
