“We have the food. We have the need. We even have the volunteers. What we don’t have is a dedicated vehicle to get this food where it’s needed most,” says John Gerrard, CEO of the HBSPCA. “Without it, pets in our community are going without meals — and families are left feeling helpless.”
The HBSPCA Urgently Needs a Dedicated Vehicle to Feed Hamilton & Burlington Pets

August 21, 2025 Hamilton, ON – The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) is calling on local organizations, businesses, and community leaders to take action. The beloved Pet Pantry Program, which provides food to thousands of pets in need, is at a critical turning point: we urgently need a dedicated vehicle to keep up with rising demand.

The HBSPCA Pet Pantry helps ensure no pet is left behind by delivering food and essential supplies to pet owners experiencing hardship, including seniors with mobility issues, individuals without transportation, and families facing unexpected financial challenges.
Â
These deliveries don’t just fill bowls — they help pet owners preserve the deep emotional bond they share with their animals during times of crisis.
Currently, the program relies on a shared vehicle used across various HBSPCA programs. But as demand continues to rise, this shared resource is no longer enough. A permanent, dedicated delivery vehicle is urgently needed to keep pace with growing requests.

Since its launch, the Pet Pantry Program has provided over:
- 931,020 meals delivered door-to-door
- 1,915,900 meals through community partners
Â
But today, delivery times are stretching to 30–60 days, and every delay means a pet goes without - and a family feels the strain.
‍
“This isn’t about convenience — it’s about compassion,” adds Gerrard. “A permanent vehicle would immediately increase our delivery capacity, reduce wait times, and ensure that pets receive the nutrition they need, when they need it.”
‍How Local Organizations Can Help
The HBSPCA is urgently calling on automotive partners, service clubs, community-minded businesses, and caring organizations to step forward and help us secure a dedicated delivery vehicle. There are several ways to make a real difference:
- Donate a vehicle – A new or gently used transit van
- Sponsor or co-sponsor – Cover the cost of a vehicle purchase
- Contribute funds – Every dollar brings us closer to feeding more pets
Â
Your support will directly help pets in our community stay healthy, loved, and safe in the homes they belong in.
