Introducing Dog & Cat Daycare and Boarding at the new Animal Welfare Hub, a first-of-its-kind community service built for real life.

‍

Life doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes a family member ends up in the hospital. Sometimes a move falls through, and you’re suddenly between places with no timeline and a dog. Sometimes you’ve booked a trip and the boarding facility you rely on can’t accommodate your cat’s medication schedule, so you’re back to square one, two weeks before you leave.

These are real situations that pet owners in Hamilton and Burlington face. Until now, there's been no single place in this community built for the whole picture, the animal's needs, the family's circumstances, and the kind of individualized attention that comes from a team that knows every animal by name.

That changes with the new Animal Welfare Hub.

Dog and Cat Daycare and Boarding, a brand-new service, embedded within our 55,000 sq ft Animal Welfare Hub, is being built to genuinely care for dozens of pets from our community every single day.

A Different Standard of Care

What sets this service apart starts with one thing no standalone boarding facility currently offers: a full-scale veterinary team, right on site. Drop your pet off on day one and they can receive any outstanding vaccines that same morning, boarding-certified before they've even settled in, and if something comes up during their stay, there's no rushing to an emergency clinic, no outsourcing to another provider. The vet is next door. That's not a feature most pet owners have ever had access to.

Our daycare and boarding service is embedded inside a full Animal Welfare Hub. That distinction matters more than it might seem at first.

Boarding animals have access to the same dedicated indoor calming housing spaces and outdoor enrichment areas that our shelter animals enjoy every day, the dog runs, the play areas, the shaded rest spaces, the catios. Your dog runs, explores, and rests on their own schedule. Your cat climbs, catches the breeze, and moves through a space that feels like theirs. They have a full day, every day.

And because we have on-site veterinary support, boarding pets can receive wellness checks right here, a first-of-its-kind service in Canada. If something comes up during their stay, our vet is steps away and ready to help.

Meet Turbo: When a Cat Needs More Than a Food Bowl

Turbo came to us requiring a consistent, careful routine - multiple medications and regular eye drops, administered on schedule, every day. For a cat in a shelter environment, that level of care could easily fall through the cracks. For a cat at a conventional boarding facility, it might not be possible at all.

Our team gave Turbo exactly what he needed. His medication schedule was followed precisely. His eye drops were administered with patience and consistency. And alongside all of that, he was still given the attention, enrichment, and gentleness that every cat in our care receives.

He wasn’t just managed. He was looked after.

Turbo’s experience is a direct preview of what the boarding service will offer pet owners who are in the same position his caregivers were in - pets with health needs that require more than basic supervision. For the family managing a senior cat on three medications, or the pet owner whose dog needs a daily injection, the question isn’t just “where will my pet stay?” It’s “who will actually take care of them?

The answer, now, is us.

Meet Nova: Care That Meets Every Animal Where They Are

Nova is a recent tri-pawd - a dog learning to navigate the world on three legs. That transition takes time, patience, and a team that understands that her enrichment won’t look exactly like every other dog’s. What energizes one dog might overwhelm another. What feels like play for a four-legged golden retriever is a completely different calculation for a dog who is still building strength and confidence in a new way of moving.

Our staff met Nova where she was. They adjusted her activities, gave her space to move at her own pace, monitored her closely, and celebrated every confident step. Special care wasn’t an exception for Nova - it was just what good care looked like for her, specifically.

This is the standard we bring to every animal in our care. And it’s exactly the standard we will bring to the boarding and daycare service. Dogs with mobility needs, anxiety, recovery requirements, or any other factor that makes their care more complex aren’t a problem to manage around - they’re exactly the kind of animal this service was designed to support.

If your pet needs more, we’re the place that can give them more.

Built for the Moments Life Doesn’t Warn You About

We designed this service around the reality of people’s lives, not an ideal version of them. Full day boarding and 24-hour overnight care are available to the general public, and HBSPCA adopters will have unique access and priority opportunities as a thank-you for choosing to adopt.

‍

But beyond logistics, we want to be clear about who this service is really for.

It’s for the family whose parent was just hospitalized. When everything else is suddenly in chaos, the question of “what do we do with the dog” shouldn’t add to the weight of it. This is a place you can call. We will take care of your pet while you focus on what matters most.

It’s for the person navigating housing instability. An eviction, a sudden move, a gap between places - these situations happen, and they happen without warning. We will never judge how you got here. We’ll just help you keep your pet safe and cared for while you get back on your feet.

It’s for the person who just wants to go on vacation and needs to know - genuinely know, not just hope - that their pet is in good hands. Not housed. Not warehoused. Cared for.

A Boarding Readiness Program That Puts Health First

One of the things that sets our boarding service apart from the start is our Boarding Readiness Program. Before any pet stays with us, we make sure they're up to date on vaccines, have received a wellness check, and that any medication needs are documented and prepared. This can happen the same day as drop-off, just arrive two hours early and our team takes care of everything on the spot. Or, if you'd prefer, book a standalone visit beforehand so your pet gets familiar with the facility and is fully onboarded before their first stay.

The Boarding Readiness Program exists for one reason: every animal who comes through our doors arrives healthy, and our team has the full picture of what they need to stay that way.

‍

And because we have on-site veterinary support, even pets who aren't planning to board with us can come in to get fully prepared. Through our Boarding Certification Program, we handle all the vaccinations and wellness checks an animal needs to be boarding-ready, and that certification travels with them. Whether they end up staying with us or heading to another facility, they arrive with everything in order for a smooth, trusted experience. It's one more way the Hub serves the whole community, not just the animals in our care.

This Is What a Community Service Looks Like

The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA has always existed to serve animals and the people who love them. This boarding and daycare service is an extension of that mission into a part of pet owners’ lives that we haven’t been able to reach before.

The Animal Welfare Hub brings something genuinely new to this community - a place where an animal's physical health, emotional state, and individual needs are all cared for under one roof, by a team that also understands the circumstances of the family behind them.

Dozens of pets from our community will come through this service every single day. Each one arriving with their own story, their own needs, their own family counting on us. And each one will receive the same standard of attention that Turbo received when he needed his eye drops, and that Nova received when she needed the world to slow down just a little while she found her footing.

Help Us Build This for Our Community

The Dog and Cat Daycare and Boarding service doesn’t exist yet - because the Hub that makes it possible hasn’t been built yet. That’s what the Unleash Love campaign is for.

‍

Every donation brings us closer to a facility where pet owners in this community have somewhere to turn - not just when things are going smoothly, but when life gets hard. Where the standard of care is high enough that a medicated cat and a three-legged dog both get exactly what they need. Where “boarding” means something better than it ever has before.

Donate today at unleashlove.ca and help us build care our whole community can count on.
