Small Hands, Big Hearts: How Young Mariia Turned Balloon Animals into Fundraising Magic

Sometimes the most meaningful acts of kindness begin with a simple idea. This summer, young animal lover Mariia couldn’t have a pet of her own, so she found another way to help animals in need: one colourful balloon animal at a time! With the help of her mother, Valentyna, Mariia spent the summer visiting local community events, sharing her balloon creations in exchange for donations to the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA). Her skills grew with every event, and so did the smiles. Instead of simply practising her craft, she used it to connect with her community, spread joy, and support animals waiting for their next chapter.

Making a Difference for Animals in Need

At the HBSPCA, we believe every animal deserves safety, compassion, and a brighter future. The animals in our care depend on community support for safe shelter, nourishing food, and medical attention, and every donation Mariia collected helped provide it.

Her fundraiser is a reminder that every contribution matters. You don’t need a large event or thousands of dollars to make a lasting impact. Sometimes a little creativity and a caring heart are enough.

Find What Brings You Joy and Use It for Good

Inspired by Mariia’s story? You can make a difference, too!

There is no single right way to fundraise. The best idea is often something simple, personal, and fun. Are you an artist, a baker, or someone who loves bringing people together? Whatever you enjoy, there may be a way to turn it into help for animals. You could:

• Organize a Bake Sale
• Celebrate Your Birthday with a Fundraiser
• Host a Neighbourhood Event
• Engage Your Colleagues or Partner with Your Business
• Use a Special Skill or Hobby, just like Mariia

Start with something you love, invite others to join in, and see where your idea takes you!

Ready to Make a Difference?

We are so proud of Mariia and grateful to her and Valentyna for choosing to support the HBSPCA this summer. Way to go, Mariia! Thank you for bringing so much joy to your community and helping animals who need us.
