From Emergency to Forever Home: The Story of Popeye and Gemma

Last summer, a group of Boston Terriers arrived at the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA looking for new beginnings. Among them were siblings Popeye and Gemma—two bright, affectionate dogs with big personalities and even bigger hearts.

Their journey highlights more than just adoption—it showcases how a compassionate community can make life-changing differences for animals.

Finding Their Families

When Popeye and Gemma first arrived, adopters got to know their unique personalities, and over time, each sibling found the right match—though in separate homes. Each dog began a new chapter filled with the promise of stability, care, and companionship.

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers—walking, socializing, and comforting the dogs—and our generous donors, some of whom sponsored adoption fees to help remove barriers.

An Unexpected Turn

Months later, Popeye’s family experienced an unexpected emergency that made it impossible for him to stay in their home. Through no fault of Popeye’s or his family, he was returned to us—a challenging moment for everyone involved.

Reunited at Last

Not long after Popeye’s return, Gemma’s family—who had adopted her months earlier—heard about his situation. Remembering the bond between the siblings, they made a compassionate decision: they would bring Popeye home too.
