Thinking about adopting a guinea pig? Here's what you need to know before bringing one home.

Guinea pigs are adorable, intelligent, and social animals that make wonderful companions. If you're considering bringing guinea pigs into your home, it's important to understand their housing, dietary, and enrichment needs to help them live happy, healthy lives.

Housing Requirements

One of the most important aspects of guinea pig care is providing enough space. Guinea pigs need room to run, explore, and express their natural behaviors.

  • Minimum  enclosure size: 7.5 square feet (commonly a 2x3 C&C grid setup)
  • Preferred  enclosure size: 10.5 square feet or larger (commonly a 2x4 C&C grid setup)

Bigger is always better when it comes to guinea pig housing. A spacious enclosure allows them to exercise and stay mentally stimulated.

Guinea Pigs Are Social Animals

Guinea pigs thrive on companionship and should ideally be kept in pairs or groups whenever possible. Living with another guinea pig helps prevent loneliness and encourages natural social behaviors. Before adopting, consider whether you have the space and resources to care for more than one guinea pig.

Diet and Nutrition

A proper diet is essential for your guinea pig's health.

Hay

About 80% of a guinea pig's diet should consist of unlimited grass hay, such as Timothy Hay or Orchard Hay.

Adult guinea pigs should not be fed alfalfa hay regularly, as it is higher in calcium and is best suited for growing baby guinea pigs.

Pellets

High-quality guinea pig pellets should be offered daily to provide additional nutrients.

Fresh Vegetables

Guinea pigs also need a daily serving of fresh vegetables to maintain good health and provide important vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin C

Unlike many animals, guinea pigs cannot produce their own vitamin C. Because of this, they are at risk of developing scurvy if they don't receive enough. Providing a vitamin C supplement or vitamin C-rich vegetables can help ensure they stay healthy.

Enrichment and Mental Stimulation

Guinea pigs are curious animals that benefit from enrichment activities.

One of the best forms of enrichment is foraging. Activities such as using snuffle mats encourage natural behaviors and provide mental stimulation.

Guinea pigs also need a safe place where they can retreat and relax. Every enclosure should include at least one hideout or small house where they can feel secure and protected.

Lifespan and Training

With proper care, guinea pigs typically live between 5 and 7 years. This long lifespan means they are a significant commitment and should not be considered short-term pets.

Many people are surprised to learn that guinea pigs can also be litter trained. While they may not achieve perfect reliability, consistent training can help keep their enclosure cleaner and make daily maintenance easier.

A Note on Nail Trimming

Regular nail trimming is another important part of keeping your cat comfortable and your furniture protected. Overgrown nails can snag on surfaces, cause discomfort, and even lead to injury. Trimming your guinea pigs nails every few weeks helps keep them at a healthy length - and makes for a happier guinea pigs and a happier home.
