From surgeries to shelter medicine, veterinary students gain practical experience that shapes their future careers.

‍Hands-On Learning in a Real-World Setting

Did you know the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA is helping shape the next generation of veterinarians?

Every year, hundreds of veterinary students, Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), and Veterinary Technician students step through our doors, eager to learn—and ready to make a difference. Through our Companion Animal Hospital and Pet Health Outreach Clinics, students gain hands-on experience, working side-by-side with our licensed veterinarians and hospital team while caring for animals in need.

Placements That Make an Impact

Students take part in a variety of placements:

  • Week-long rotations for fourth-year students
  • 100-hour placements for in-depth learning
  • One-to two-week intensives for focused skill-building

Over the years, our expert veterinary team has performed more than 50,000 surgeries, creating a rich learning environment where studentssee veterinary medicine in action. These placements offer real exposure toshelter operations, complex medical cases, and collaborative decision-making—lessons that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom.

Partnerships with Leading Institutions

‍

We proudly partner with schools such as Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph), Sheridan College, Conestoga College, St. George’s University, and the Animal Behavioural College, providing students with high-quality training opportunities. These partnerships help ensure that future veterinarians and RVTs are equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and compassion to thrive in their careers.

Volunteer Opportunities for Students

Beyond formal placements, we host a roster of university student volunteers, offering meaningful clinic experience that supports applications to programs like the Ontario Veterinary College. Most volunteer opportunities open in the spring and fall, though students are often welcomed year-round. Every shift provides real-world exposure while supporting the animals who rely on our services daily.

The Pet First Promise

‍

At the heart of every placement and volunteer shift is our Pet First Promise: every animal who comes through our doors is treated as if they were our own. Students quickly learn that veterinary care is about more than procedures—it’s about respect, dignity, and advocacy for each animal.

Looking Ahead

We’re proud to provide students with the skills, experience, and compassion they’ll carry throughout their careers. Every student who learns with us contributes to better care for the animals who rely on our services—and helps shape the future of veterinary medicine.
