Recognizing the Heart of Our Work: Introducing HBSPCA’s Volunteer Rewards Program

At the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA, volunteerism is not a supporting function—it is a driving force behind everything we do.

In recent years, volunteer engagement has grown exponentially across the organization. Today, volunteers are embedded in every corner of our work—supporting animal care, engaging with the community, assisting behind the scenes, and strengthening operations in ways both visible and unseen.

They are present in every department. Every role. Every day.

Collectively, volunteers and foster parents contribute more than 80,000 hours annually to the HBSPCA. It is a level of dedication that not only supports our mission—it makes it possible.

As this community has grown, so too has our responsibility to recognize and celebrate their impact in meaningful ways.

While we continue to show appreciation through events, workshops, and ongoing engagement, it became clear that we needed to do more. Not just to acknowledge the time our volunteers give, but to reflect the depth of their contribution and the culture they help create.

That is why we are proud to introduce the HBSPCA Volunteer Rewards Program.

Developed in partnership with Applauz, the program is designed to recognize the many ways volunteers contribute to our organization. Volunteers can earn points through their ongoing commitment—whether by completing weekly shifts, supporting events, participating in training, or going above and beyond in their roles.

These points can then be redeemed through a diverse marketplace offering thousands of items. Volunteers also have the option to share their recognition—by gifting points to fellow volunteers—or to give back by donating points directly to the HBSPCA.

More than a rewards system, the program is a reflection of our values.

It creates space for volunteers to recognize one another, to celebrate contributions in real time, and to strengthen the sense of community that defines the HBSPCA experience. It acknowledges that impact is not measured only in hours, but in the passion, commitment, and care that volunteers bring to every interaction.

As one of the most vital forces within our organization, our volunteers deserve recognition that is as meaningful and dynamic as their contributions.

This program not only recognizes their time and efforts but gives them a platform to communicate, share and recognize each other.”

The Volunteer Rewards Program is one more way we are investing in the people who give so much to animals in need.

Because at the HBSPCA, volunteerism is more than service—itis community, connection, and compassion in action.

And it deserves to be recognized.
