A story of care, connection, and compassion - River’s journey at HBSPCA shows the lasting impact of one special animal.

Some animals stay with us for a short time. Others become part of the fabric of who we are.

River was one of those animals.

River first came into the care of the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA in September 2021. What followed was not a short stay, but a long-term journey of care, connection, and commitment. Over the years, River received the full spectrum of support we strive to provide every animal who enters our doors - from routine preventative care and annual wellness exams to dentistry, diagnostics, and ongoing medical attention.

Their needs evolved over time, and so did our care. Through every stage, River’s comfort and wellbeing remained at the centre of every decision.

In 2025, River was adopted and spent several months in a home. Although that placement ultimately ended and River returned to our care through no fault of their own, they came back to familiar surroundings - where they were known, understood, and deeply cared for.

At that point, River was not just a patient in our care. But apart of our daily life.

Surrounded by familiar staff and volunteers, River continued to receive consistent enrichment, affection, and compassionate attention. They were, in every sense, a member of the HBSPCA family.

Earlier this year, River began experiencing a systemic decline in conditions associated with age-related disease processes. Over time, it became clear that despite ongoing medical support and careful monitoring, their health challenges were progressing. After more than four years in our care, and with their comfort and dignity as the guiding priority, our veterinary team made the deeply compassionate decision to help River pass peacefully.

Because River was family, arrangements were made for cremation, with their remains returned to us.

This past week, we gathered in a quiet moment of remembrance in the upper field of our leash-free area - the very land where our new campus will take shape in the future. There, River was laid to rest in a place that reflects their journey and their lasting connection to this organization.

In that space, River will remain part of us - not only in memory, but as part of the foundation we continue to build upon.

River’s story reflects something fundamental about the HBSPCA. That our work is not only about care in the moment, but about continuity, dignity, and the relationships formed along the way.

We are grateful to every staff member and volunteer who supported River throughout their journey. Their compassion, patience, and dedication ensured that River was never alone - and always surrounded by care.

Some lives leave paw prints that remain long after they are gone.

River’s is one of them.

The name of this animal has been changed to protect privacy; however, we felt it was important to share their story given the profound impact they had on our team. River’s journey meant a great deal to our team, and this remembrance provided a meaningful way to acknowledge their lasting place in the HBSPCA’s story and future home.
