When his cat started choking, Matt didn't panic. He remembered his training - and it made all the difference.

It was late in the evening when Matt noticed something was wrong with Izzy.

The beloved family cat had gotten into the green bin, found some leftover chicken - and was choking on a bone. What followed was the kind of moment no pet owner ever wants to face: panic, urgency, and very little time.

While one family member called an emergency vet, Matt did something else.

He remembered his training.

A Course That Stuck

Matt, an HBSPCA staff member and a familiar face around our building, had attended a Pet First Aid course at the HBSPCA. In the chaos of that evening, the skills he learned came back to him clearly. He got to work - carefully, methodically, and not without a few scratches along the way - and successfully dislodged the bone.

Izzy was safe.

"I always hoped I'd never need to use what I learned," said Matt. "But when it happens, you don’t have time to think – you just have to do. That training stays with you, and I genuinely believe it saved Izzy's life."

Emergencies Don't Wait

Matt's story is a powerful reminder of something we say often - but that hits differently when you hear it in real life: emergencies don't announce themselves. They happen late at night, on weekends, in the middle of dinner. They happen even in careful, loving homes where pets are watched closely and cared for deeply.

A chicken bone in the green bin. A curious cat. A few seconds.

That's all it takes.

Knowing what to do in those moments - staying calm, acting quickly, and having the right skills at your fingertips - can be the difference between a scary story with a happy ending and something far worse.

Be Ready Before You Need to Be

‍

The HBSPCA offers Pet First Aid training for exactly this reason. Our course is designed to give pet owners the knowledge and confidence to respond in an emergency - from choking and bleeding to burns, fractures, and more. You'll learn hands-on techniques taught by experienced instructors, in a supportive environment where asking questions is encouraged.

Matt didn't know when he signed up that he'd be using those skills on his own cat weeks later. None of us ever do.

But he was ready. And because of that, Izzy is home, safe, and presumably steering clear of the green bin.

‍

Because the best time to learn pet first aid is before you need it.
