Discover how volunteering at the HBSPCA helps combat loneliness, build community, and create meaningful connections for people and animals.

Loneliness is at an all-time high—and more people than ever are searching for ways to feel connected again. Volunteering offers a powerful solution.

At the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA, volunteers don’t just support animal welfare—they find purpose, build relationships, and become part of a community that truly makes a difference.

Come for the Animals. Stay for the People.

Animal lovers often ask themselves what more they can do. They care deeply for their own pets and want to extend that care outward. Volunteering offers that opportunity—but it also offers something unexpected in return: connection.

With more than 400 active volunteers and over 50 unique roles, the HBSPCA is powered by people who show up for animals—and for each other.

“People sometimes worry that they don’t have the skills to volunteer,” says Melissa, Director of Volunteer Services and Program Partnerships. “But we have something for everyone.”

Not all roles are animal-facing, but every role is essential. From administrative support to event coordination, from research to community outreach—each position helps build a stronger, more compassionate community.

Volunteers typically commit just a few hours a week, but the impact goes far beyond that time.

When Volunteering Becomes a Lifeline

‍

For many, volunteering begins during a time of change.

For Kathy, it came during a period of profound loss. After the passing of her husband, she was searching for something to hold onto. When she saw the HBSPCA was looking for volunteers, she applied right away.

“I had recently lost my husband and wanted to help out
The HBSPCA helped me not only get through a difficult time, but to keep moving forward.”

Today, Kathy is one of the welcoming voices at the front office—volunteering two full days a week with warmth, humour, and compassion.

Her role supports not only the organization, but every person who walks through the door or calls for help.

“Kathy was one of the first volunteers I met,” says Melissa. “I was immediately inspired by her positivity, welcoming smile, and passion for her role.”
Kelly, Coordinator Customer Experience, adds:
“She brings a great sense of humour and always has a story that brightens our day. Kathy reminds us that giving back can be healing, joyful, and full of connection.”

Finding Purpose Beyond the Kennels

‍

Not every volunteer works directly with animals—but every volunteer makes a difference. Mirka is one of them. Inspired by the HBSPCA’s mission, she found her place supporting the Volunteer Department with her administrative skills and photography.

“I’m always amazed at how many wonderful volunteers walk through our doors
Being part of this team is so rewarding.”

From capturing special moments to helping organize recruitment efforts, Mirka plays a key role in strengthening the volunteer community itself.

“Mirka goes above and beyond,” says Melissa. “She brings energy, organization, and a willingness to help wherever it’s needed.”

Like many volunteers, she discovered something deeper than expected: ‍

A sense of belonging.

Where Passion Meets Community

For Sheila, volunteering brought together two things she has always loved—animals and people.

“I’ve always cared about animals, and I enjoy working with people. Volunteering here is the best of both worlds.”

She quickly became a key part of the Pet Thrift Shop, helping raise funds that directly support animal care. In 2025, she expanded her role to include dog walking—proving that when it comes to helping, there is always room to grow.

“Sheila is the kind of volunteer every organization dreams of,” says HBSPCA staff Sage. “She’s dedicated, positive, and truly cares.”

Connection in a Disconnected World

At a time when loneliness is affecting more people than ever, volunteering offers something simple but powerful:

  • A reason to get out of the house
  • A place to belong
  • People to connect with
  • A shared purpose

And while animals are often the reason people walk through the door, it’s the human connection that keeps them coming back.

It’s something Melissa hears often:

People come for the animals. They stay for the people.
